Some of us have been enamored with Gigi Masin since hearing his Talk To The Sea compilation. Music From Memory, the label responsible for that release, has turned to Masin again for their fourth title. This time the music comes from a collaboration between Masin, Land Of Light's Jonny Nash, and Marco Sterk (bka Young Marco). The trio met in 2013 and recorded the music on Clouds over the course of a weekend spent at Sterk's studio in Amsterdam's derelict downtown. Gigi takes on Rhodes and piano, while Nash handles guitar, melodica, synths and trumpet, and Sterk supplies more syth work and general rhythmic backing. The music is all improvised, with the songs amazingly being captured in single takes. This is mellow music, for sure, and plenty enjoyable. You could call it mood music, but it's more atmospheric than that. To put Clouds on is to be enveloped by one. You'll be taken from the seaside up into the night sky while feeling weightless and careless. Put this on and get lost, you'll be bringing some light into the world.
