Dwight Sykes: Songs Volume One Vinyl LP
Step into the life zone. Songs Vol. 1 is about as real as it gets, a seven track compilation of unreleased material from Detroit musician Dwight Sykes. Unless you're an elite collector or an old head from Michigan, chances are you haven't heard of Sykes, (though he did release some tracks under Jahari that received radio play in the area during 80's). This compilation looks to remedy this and shine light on his oft-overlooked work. The tracks featured here were culled from Sykes' personal tape archive, recorded in his home studio between 1980 to 1990. It's a very personal and sincere collection of outsider funk that probably was never meant to see the light of day, but we are so glad it finally has. Check the vibes on the awesome "In The Life Zone," "That's The Way Love Is," "Bye," "Where Ever You Are," and "The Good Times." An absolutely incredible set of lo-fi soul sounds, dug up by PPU of course. Fans of outsider funk, Napoleon Cherry, that Personal Space compilation, etc. need this in their life. Cop now and thank me later. Recommended.
